Puffing Billy Steam Museum

The Puffing Billy Steam Museum is located behind the Menzies Creek station and houses a unique collection of narrow gauge locomotives, rolling stock and steam machinery.  Click here for a list.  Please note: The museum is not currently open.

Picnic and barbecue facilities are available.

It opened in 1963 and soon had a growing collection of locomotives and railway relics.  Volunteers have restored many exhibits and some have been returned to service.

The museum houses Australian and overseas locomotives representing some of the world's most famous builders and spanning more than 50 years.

Highlights of the collection

  • 3' 6" gauge "Pozieres" was built by Andrew Barclay Son & Co. in Scotland in 1918 for service on military railways in France but with the end of the war found service in Port Pirie, South Australia.

  • A rack ABT locomotive from the Mt. Lyell and Mining Co. Ltd, ran on the unique rack railway between Queenstown and Strahan in Tasmania.

  •  On Wednesday 19th November 2003, the ABT Loco was moved on low loader for the start of its new home again back in Tasmania where it will be restored to running order for the West Coast  Wilderness Railway.

  • A geared Shay locomotive worked on the Ali-shan Forest railway in Taiwan.  It was built by the Lima Locomotive Works, USA, in 1912 and donated to the railway in 1972.
