Eighteen years ago, 6A was withdrawn from service with an unserviceable boiler. It was the 4th Victorian Railways narrow gauge locomotive to be built at the Newport Workshops, and the last to be originally painted two tone green with white lining. December 2001 saw 6A return to service in its original colour scheme from 1901. However, on Tuesday 22nd January 2002, the Minister for Transport, Mr Peter Batchelor officially unveiled a plaque commemorating the return to service of this locomotive. He made special mention of the staff and volunteers who assisted in the restoration process. Puffing Billy now has 5 operating NA class locos to 'share the load' which will take much pressure off our stretched mechanical engineering department. Thanks to Greg Furlong (www.vrsteam.com) for the photos of 6A and to Sonia Barratt for photos on the official launch day.
