Want to volunteer?

The majority of staff at Puffing Billy Railway are volunteers. They may be having a day off from their 'normal jobs', using their retirement to come and help the railway, meeting new friends in a safe and energetic (or Dynamic) environment, or simply enjoying a holiday in Australia. Many volunteers are also members of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society.

Volunteer work at Puffing Billy Railway is divided into the following categories:

Locomotives Cleaners / Trainee Firemen
Get close and personal with a locomotive! Be an important part of the engine team. Use a bit of elbow grease to see the engine shine!

Refreshment Room Staff
Join a team of volunteers, gain retail experience and assist passengers from around the world to enjoy their experience.

Building Maintenance and Environmental Revegetation / Gardening
Assist as part of a team to make our heritage stations and grounds a pleasant and safe environment for our passengers by providing basic gardening and maintenance activities.

Train Conductors and Booking Clerks (Ticket Sellers)
Greet our passengers with an old fashioned welcome in a safe and friendly environment by assisting with crowd control, tourist information and selling and checking of tickets.

Workshops (Engineering) & Ways and Works
Be actively involved in the workshops by restoring and maintaining locomotives and rolling stock. Alternatively, you restore and maintain the historic track and buildings.

On the job training will be provided for all roles.
Additional roles are available with the relevant training, such as Station Master, Fireman, Guard, Driver and Train Host.

Groups

We are happy to welcome groups of people as volunteers. These come for many purposes, for instance, companies and tertiary institutions have sent parties to practice their skills or for team building exercises. There does not have to be a specific reason to bring a team along, however, most come along simply to enjoy working on the Railway.

Youth Day

A Youth Day is organised every second Tuesday during school holidays, except the last week of school holidays in January.
